All about us. |
Greetings from Durban, South Africa! This is our website which we will update from time to time as we try to make it a little more interesting. This update is being made on Christmas day, 1999. To introduce the family first: IAN. The Dad. Ex-Brit. Recently retired early from full time orchestral clarinet playing, he now spends his days running 'Bugzee's', the family pre-school business, repairing clarinets and saxophones, and homeschooling the two boys. Also tries to find time to pursue his hobby of portrait photography whenever possible. CHARMAINE. The Mom. Capetonian and proud of it! Ex-ballet dancer, but can still dance the tights off kids half her age. Principal of 'Bugzee's', she also homeschools the boys, teaches ballet part-time, sews whenever possible, is an agent for Dorling Kindersley books and generally works three times as hard as most mothers. Likes to be described as 'petite' (not 'short'!). CHRIS. Big brother. Twelve years old. Has a multitude of interests. Chess is the favourite one, and has just returned from Port Elizabeth in the cape, where he gained his KwaZulu-Natal colours representing the province in the under 14 team. Also enjoys theatre, scouts, rats and mice (owns two of each), cricket, tapdancing and speech and drama. He recently achieved a distinction in the Trinity College London Speech and Drama Grade III exam. NICK. Little brother. Eight years old. Creative artist extra-ordinaire, he spends his free time painting, writing, drawing, sculpting, and being a general busybody. Has two rabbits, Patch and Spot, that live in a large hutch made by him with a little help from Dad. Loves to be outside, and loves to whizz round the house on his bike chased by Scruffy and Charlie, the two dogs. Was second runner-up for cub of the year in 1999. Also left handed like his mother.........!

The most important part of our lives is 'Bugzee's Pre-school'. We started the school less than seven years ago when it seemed the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra was doomed and we needed a backup plan should Ian be retrenched. The school did so well that he ended up resigning! There are approximately eighty children enrolled at present. Incidentally, the orchestra is still going strong. Generally Ian is in charge of administration and maintenance, while Charmaine is Principal. It's a busy career for both, but extremely rewarding. | Our work

Our play |
Play is not something we find much time for, but our decision at the beginning of 1999 to homeschool our children has given us more quality time together. If you have the time to do it, take your kids out of school. The rewards are many, and you are in control of your children's lives. When we can afford it we try to get away to the Drakensberg. It must be one of the most beautiful places in the world. The foto is of our favourite retreat, Lake Naverone. Durban is a stuffy, humid place to be in Summer, and there's nothing better than to get away to climb the peaks and do a spot of trout fishing.
